Douglas Shontz

Associate University Counsel

Douglas Shontz joined the Office of University Counsel in 2019. Before the University, he spent over 15 years, with over 10 years at the RAND Corporation, advising federal agencies on a range of topics, including research, technology development, data and information management, public records (Freedom of Information Act), public contracting and procurement, international treaties, regulatory compliance, arbitration, and national security matters. In private practice, he has worked with a start-up company on industrial hemp and performed duties of an administrative law judge for local real property disputes. Before law school, he worked on hazardous waste clean-up projects as an environmental engineer. He is licensed to practice in Michigan, earned a JD from the Indiana University School of Law (Maurer), and earned a BSE in Chemical Engineering from the University of Michigan.
