Douglas Shontz

Senior Associate University Counsel

Douglas Shontz joined the Office of University Counsel in 2019. Douglas is the lead counsel for research administration and compliance, intellectual property (copyright, patent, and trademark), data security, technology transfer and licensing, and related matters, including the Office of Technology Management (OTM), Sponsored Programs Administration (SPA), and the Institutional Review Board (IRB) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Before the University, he spent over 15 years, with over 10 years at the RAND Corporation, advising federal agencies, including research, data management, procurement, international treaties, and national security matters. In private practice, he worked with a start-up company on industrial hemp and performed duties of an administrative law judge for property disputes. Before law school, he worked on hazardous waste clean-up projects as an environmental engineer. He is licensed to practice in Michigan and in-house in Illinois, earned a JD from the Indiana University School of Law (Maurer), and earned a BSE in Chemical Engineering from the University of Michigan.
