The Office of University Counsel provides legal advice and representation to the Board of Trustees, the President and other UA and campus administrators in their capacity as agents conducting University business. The Office also represents University-Related Organizations.
University Counsel Thomas R. Bearrows is an officer of the University who reports directly to the President and the Board of Trustees. He oversees legal offices on the University's three campuses. Steven A. Veazie is Deputy University Counsel and Executive Director of Labor Relations. Each campus has a Campus Legal Counsel who oversees the legal services provided on that campus.
When you have a legal issue or question related to your University duties, contact the main number of the Office of University Counsel on your campus, and you will be appropriately referred.
The attorneys in the office do not provide legal services to faculty, staff or students in their personal matters. Nor do they represent or advise employees with claims against the University. Students with personal legal issues should contact Student Legal Services at UI at Chicago or UI at Urbana-Champaign.
